Charms

Charms are a catchall form of magical device. In some traditions, a charm that attracts forces to you is called a talisman, while a charm that banishes unwanted forces and protects you is called an amulet. Other traditions think of a talisman as a three-dimensional container of magical substances for your spell, such as a vial of herbal powder, while a charm is more two-dimensional, involving a flat surface and a symbol of your magical intention. Charms work through the system of correspondences, relating natural substances or geometric symbols to your magic. By carrying them around, you automatically attract or banish forces in alignment with your spell. Many charms are simple bags of cloth, with the color matched to the intention, and filled with herbs, stones, metals, or other tools that are connected to the intention. A charm to attract romantic love might have rose petals, yarrow, hot pepper flakes, a rose quartz, and a copper penny.

Candle Magic

Candle magic is a powerful form of magic. Though many think of it as an ancient art, it is most likely a bit more modern, since candles are relatively modern and only now affordable and readily available. The practice of candle magic probably originated in lamp and fire magic. The candle is so powerful because it inherently represents the four elements in magic. The wax is earthy. The flame is obviously the fire element and consumes air to burn. The wax melts, becoming like water. To do candle magic, use a candle with a color that matches your intention. Cleanse it. You can “dress” the candle by carving any appropriate magical symbols or letters into it, or carving the name of the person whom the spell will affect, the person’s astrological sign, or anything else. You can combine candle magic with affirmations and carve the affirmation on the candle. Carving can be done with any small implement, such as a small knife, pen knife, or letter opener. You can even use your fingernail. You can also dress the candle by anointing it with oils that correspond with the intention. Other practitioners will take it a step further and roll the oiled candle in dry herbs that match the intention. Some even carve out the bottom of the candle and pack the end with herbs, so they will burn at the end of the spell. Once the candle is cleansed and dressed, hold it and think about your intention. Get clear and focused. Visualize your intent. Speak it as an affirmation. Focus your will however you can. Imagine filling the candle with your energy. When you are done, light the candle. Ideally, you should let it burn out, but if you can’t, snuff it and then relight it later. Never blow it out or dip it in water. You want to keep its unique balance of the elements, and not add air or water to it.
